Growing Wine Grapes in Zone 3Natural Living and Healing

New Grape Vine Growth Was Frost Killed

Bad news.   All that lush new grape vine growth was frost killed when we had a sudden late frost to the mid 20s (F) on the night of May 22, 2015.  There must have been 30-50 tiny baby wine grape bunches popping out with the unusual hot May weather.  Ah, the trials and tribulations of being a northern grape grower.

late frost on northern wine grape vinesSince then there are a few secondary buds popping out, and just a few leaves and sprouts that didn’t get hit for some odd, random reason.  There was also a whole young plant that was not covered, but appears virtually untouched by frost.  I’m keeping an eye on that one in the future.  It may be an unusually frost-hardy plant.

A reader sent me this email this morning about this post:
“Just saw your frosted grapes and wanted to share with you the pic that my sister and brother-in-law sent me from Denver @9pm last night. This hail storm happened about 7pm yesterday. Says it shredded his tomato plants. They’ve already had 2 cars totaled from the body damage because of the hail in the past year in Denver.”
