Evening Winter Visitor: Barred Owl video

Barred Owl, photographed by Robert P. SpenglerBy Mary G. Holland
February 26, 2015

We had a very unusual close-up visitor two nights ago at our bird feeder.  I was able to capture a barred owl video. I’ve been spending the past couple of days getting the images together into a video, off and on.  I’m just an amateur at this video thing, don’t get your hopes up.

We’ve heard these for years in our woods.  They have a call that sounds like, “Who Cooks For You?”  We’ve never seen one, and we didn’t know what species it was.  Until now.  Click on the picture to see the video.  I had to reduce the image quality to upload it, but I hope you will  enjoy!

  • we can hear them at camp but I’ve never seen one. I can call to “Hootie” and he will come from across the pond…closer and closer and sometimes I think he thinks I’m his mate…makes some really strange noises :-) thank you for sharing this!!

Hey thanks for your note, Dayna! This guy came back last night, we saw him sitting on the shepherd’s hook for the suet cake. Maybe he’s a regular now. The winter is certainly long, he’s probably hungry!
